Short CV

Matthias Kaltenbrunner joined the Chair of Modern History in February 2024 as a research fellow in the ERC Adv. Grant project InechO. Prior to that he worked as postdoctoral researcher at the Research Center for the History of Transformations (RECET) at the University of Vienna and also held fellowships at the University of Alberta and at Harvard University.

His research interests include the history of Eastern and Central Europe in the late 19th and 20th centuries, with particular focus on concentration camps and Gulag, migration as well as social and economic transformations in Europe after 1989/1991.

For InechO, he investigates the ambiguous legacies of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (Comecon) within the framework of differing transition paths in Central Europe after 1989/91. For more information on the project, please see the InechO website.
